Herwaardering van “the commons” als basis voor samenwerken en het delen van de giften van het leven

Het eigenaarschap is eigenlijk nog maar een zeer nieuw fenomeen. Vroeger was land van iedereen en van niemand. En beheerde je dat samen en de keuzes kwamen voort uit wat voor de gemeenschap belanghebbend was.

Maar we zijn stekpaaltjes gaan slaan en hebben van elke vierkante centimeter een economisch en commercieel prijskaartje aan gehangen. En dat heeft allemaal negatieve gevolgen gehad voor onze verbondenheid met het landschap en elkaar.

Elinor Ostrom wil deze verloren samenwerking weer terug brengen en heeft voor deze moderne tijd er een framework voor bedacht.

As such, the commons of a particular locality or culture are a birthright of that community. The commons are about relationships and belonging, about interbeing rather than separation. Holding things in ‘common’ invites people to collaborate and share the abundance provided by a particular place and culture, while private (or corporate) ownership creates artificial scarcity and separation, driving us to compete.

Elinor Ostrom heeft er wat regels voor opgesteld

1. define the community of people sharing the commons
2. adapt rules of use to the type of commons and its users
3. commoners themselves have to set the rules
4. the state of the commons has to be monitored in an accountable way
5. abuse by individuals needs to be curbed in a gradual way
