Helping out (a little bit)

On the 27th of May 2006 there was an earthquake on Java due to the eruption of the volcano Merapi. 80% of the houses collapsed and 5651 people in Klaten alone died.

Tino who lives in Indonesia has family in Klaten and took the initiative to find ways to collect money to personally help his family and the village they live in. Together with Carina I offered to make this website to keep the people who donate informed and at the same time make a personal document of Tino’s effort and the rebuilding of lives.

Our power to act is really something beautiful and makes a difference.

Netvibes is getting there…

I used NetNewsWire Lite for more than a year now and I tried to migrate to netvibes before. Technicaly it’s easy, no pain there. But I just didn’t get in that “flow” I was used to and it lacked overview. That’s changing.. And I guess I’m going to see if I can kick an old habit. Now netvibes should make an OPML of my content available so I can easily get it out when I want to change back again and again and again.

Black Eyed Peas – Pump It

Trying to figure out why I watched and listened to the clip repeatedly for say 40 times.

Is it the fun, the quite (deliberately) not perfect clip, the background classic, the nice clapping, the nice rhythm, the lyrics, the kick ass, the great mix of weird sounds, the great finish at the end, the shortness? Your guess is as good as mine.

Friesland 1997

Still cleaning my studio. This photo was taken in the timeframe I was working at stichting Kalamiteit in Dokkum in the provence of Friesland.

On a regular basis I took my car for a drive and looked for great spots to film / photograph or draw. Basically I just wanted to be in that silent space in the Dutch countryside.

My gnome friend

He was swimming in the water when we were living in Weesp on the river Amstel (1999). I helped him out and gave him this tree to live in.He stayed there for 3 years. Then he moved on in the company of some children, can’t blame him.

(found this photo while cleaning my studio)

WAR

I saw this picture on the VPRO website today and I can’t describe how this photo makes me feel. But I can’t get my eyes of it and my stomach and hart are getting heavy and heavier. Yesterday we (the Netherlands) celebrated our liberty, the end of WOII. Maybe that’s why.

A map of the early universe

Best ever map of the early universe revealed

Stephen Battersby – March 17th 2006 – link

On Thursday, the WMAP team revealed the best map ever drawn of microwaves from the early universe, showing variations in the brightness of radiation from primordial matter. The pattern of these variations fits the predictions of a physical theory called inflation, which suggests that during the first split second of existence the universe expanded incredibly fast

Amazing what we are capable of detecting, extrapolating and form theories and create hypothesises about.
